The city of Conway is considering options on how to address drainage issues.
One option officials are looking into is a Federal Emergency Management Agency grant.
“The city is interested in applying for a FEMA hazard mitigation grant program to purchase and demolish houses subject to flooding,” Central Arkansas Planning and Development District Program Manager Amanda Adaire said.
Residents who own property in flood zones on South Donaghey Avenue and Sugar Creek Drive received letters last week informing them of the possibility.
Adaire stressed that the purchases would be voluntary and not eminent domain.
“It is just for the people who want to participate,” she said.
If the city is awarded the grant, the city would likely purchase and raze the properties in 2019.
